Quick question: When is this event?

Looking at the email I received, you wouldn’t know. If you’re trying to get companies to sponsor your event, it helps to tell them when the event is taking place. While that information is available by clicking on the registration link, why should I have to go to your site to find out the date of the event? Additionally, the copy tells me that I can register at the provided link. I don’t want to register since I don’t know when the event is.

In the past few weeks I’ve been hearing from a few recruiters and HR people from startups that are looking to fill startup marketing jobs. <shameless plug>Since I run the Boston-area Startup Marketing Meetup </shameless plug> I’ve been sending emails to the entire group whenever I hear of a job.

A few issues with that:

Not everyone in the group is interested in hearing about startup marketing job openings

Those that aren’t interested might unsubscribe from the group so they stop hearing about the openings

It feels kind of spammy

So I came up with an idea. Okay, two ideas.

1. StartupMarketingJobs.com – It’s a quick and dirty job board using Jobberbase that I’ve set up to post jobs that are strictly related to startup marketing. The site is incredibly slow and only has a handful of jobs on it right now, but it’s brand new.

2. A Mailing List – Retro as all hell, I’ve set up a mailing list. If you want to be notified when a new startup marketing job is available (or posted), send me an email at nathan (at) startupmarketingjobs.com with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line, and I’ll let you know when I hear about a new job opening.

A couple of quick notes:

I won’t share your email address with anyone.

I’m only going to use this list to send emails when I hear about an opening that is relevant.

A giraffe’s heart is 2 feet long and weighs about 25 pounds.

If you’re a recruiter or are from a company looking to hire for a startup marketing position, email me at nathan (at) startupmarketingjobs.com and I’ll post your job on the site. It won’t cost you anything.

TLDR; I’ve been hearing about open startup marketing jobs. If you want to hear about them, send me an email or check out the site.

The first job post here on marketingstartups.com, and it’s for a marketing job at Aprigo. So if you (or someone you can recommend) are the person I’m describing in the following job description, get in touch with me at marketing@aprigo.com ASAP.

Here’s the listing:

We’re a Waltham-based Software As A Service startup looking to add a marketing superstar to our small, yet awesome team.

The ideal candidate was born to thrive in a startup environment and thinks that ridiculous deadlines, endless “to-do” lists, and huge challenges are the reasons to wake up in the morning. If you’re all for committees, task forces, long meetings, corporate buzzwords, strict job responsibilities and no pressure….well, this won’t be for you.

We’re building a marketing machine to bring in highly qualified leads for our product, which is aimed at IT Managers in mid-market companies, and we’re looking for just the right person to help us fuel it. Some of the requirements include:

Energy- Yeah, we know. Every job listing asks for an “energetic self starter”, but we mean it.

Writing- This is HUGE. This job requires mad writing skills.

Motivation- The whole “not my job” thing doesn’t fly here, as we’re all trying to make our company take off.

Organization- Program management and organizational skills are arguably the most important aspects of this job. You should be a master of the spreadsheet and help us stay disciplined with all our marketing activities.

Tech Saavy- We’re a tech startup, so having a strong tech background certainly helps. We’re not necessarily looking for a subject matter expert that knows everything there is to know about storage tiering and data governance. We’re looking for someone that can understand the topics relevant to us and write about them intelligently.

Some of the responsibilities include:

Product Mktg- Creating collateral to drive sales including whitepapers, data sheets and other product collateral

Adwords- Creating ads for and managing our Google PPC efforts

LGP- Managing lead guarantee programs

Program Mgmt- Organizing integrated marketing programs, scheduling and planning events and owning the marketing calendar

Outbound mktg- Owning the outbound side of our marketing campaigns including lists, email blasts, etc.

Co-Marketing- Coming up with creative co-marketing opportunities with complimentary companies

Email Newsletter- Producing our monthly email newsletter that does not yet exist

Written Case studies- Writing case studies based on interviews with our customers

If this is you, we want to hear from you ASAP. Email us at marketing@aprigo.com with the following info:

Who are you, and what have you done that makes you perfect for this role?

Let’s pretend you’ve got the job. Briefly explain your plan of action based on the above responsibilities.

What’s a good example of your writing style?

Tell us about yourself. What do you like to do? What web sites do you visit on a daily basis? Just give us an idea about who you are (not just bullets on a resume)

Well, you know how they tell you to write about what you’re familiar with? Here goes.

So, a couple of days ago, matchmine shut down. All 50ish of us have been working the phones, sending emails, and talking to friends trying to land our next gigs. Here are some of the tactics I’ve been using to find my next job.

1. Ning- Once the news hit, our CEO set up a matchmine network on Ning.com. The group is by invitation only, so we have a private group allowing us to post resumes, send leads to each other, and post information on search firms, headhunters, etc. Right now, this is our main forum for interaction.

2. LinkedIn- An obvious one, but so far, the best source for finding the next job. As soon as I changed my status on LinkedIn, I started getting notifications from people with opportunities. In addition, linkedin has been great for networking. By writing recommendations for former co-workers and requesting recommendations, we’re able to give potential employers a better idea of what we’re like than we could ever do on a static resume.

3. Twitter- If you’ve got a solid network on twitter, it never hurts to notify your friends that you’re looking for a new position. I wrote a blog post on the company’s closing, and linked to that on twitter. I got some great responses, and at least one solid lead.

4. Startuply- Still want to stay in the startup game? Startuply is a new job board specifically devoted to jobs at startup companies. The Boston-area list is pretty thin and far more technical than I’m looking for, but there are some decent listings there.

5. ReadWriteWeb’s JobWire- It’s brand new, but worth checking out. ReadWriteWeb is using JobThread to run their own startup-focused job board.

6. TechCrunch’s CrunchBoard- TechCrunch uses personalforce to run their tech job board.

7. Facebook- Simply saying that I was looking for a new gig led to several facebook messages from friends and colleagues, some giving decent leads.

8. Mashable’s Job Board- Though the listings are thin, mashable’s job list has some good filtering, allowing you to search by job type, location, etc.

9. GoBigNetwork- Lists nothing but startup jobs.

10. HotStartupJobs.com- A startup focused job aggregator.

11. StartupAgents.com- A meeting place for startups and applicants to find each other. As a job seeker, you create a profile describing your startup experience, risk level, etc., and invite “agents” to connect with you.

12. Startupers.com- A no-frills job board centered around startups.

13- Your own blog- You know, like I’m doing right now.

These are just a few of the free resources available to those looking to snag a web 2.0 or startup-based gig. Please feel free to post any others you may know of.
